After the installation of CafeTran Espresso, prepare your source language document for the translation and follow these steps:

  1. Run CafeTran. The Dashboard window is displayed.

  2. In the Dashboard, select your language pair for the translation.

  3. Click the "Add memory" button in the Translation Memories (TMX) panel to add an existing translation memory .tmx file to your project. If you wish to create a new translation memory, click the New memory button.

  4. Select your favorite Internet resources for translation in the "Free web resources and images" panel of the Dashboard.

  5. Click the "New" button and choose a source language document in the File Chooser.  Alternatively, you can drag and drop the source language document to the Dashboard window.

  6. In the "Project Configuration" panel, accept the default settings and click the "Finish" button. The Translation board opens showing the source language document and the selected resources in the tabs.

  7. The first sentence to translate appears in the source segment editor. The translation for this segment will be given in the target segment editor below.

  8. The Matchboard panel displays the machine translation (MT) and the results (Fragments, Exact and Fuzzy matches) from translation memories (TM).

  9. Click or select with the mouse the best TM match or fragments for the transfer to the current target segment. You can use keyboard shortcuts in the Translate menu. Exact memory matches are transferred automatically.

  10. Additionally, you can use the machine translation services opened as Web resources in the tabs (e.g Google Translate, DeepL or Microsoft Bing Translator). Just select a tab with the MT resource, set the language pair on its webpage and then click the Translate button in the source segment editor's toolbar. To transfer the translation from the MT webpage to the target segment editor, click the Transfer MT button next to the Translate button.

  11. You can type your translation in the target segment editor directly instead of using any machine translations or translation memory results.

  12. Formatting such as bold, underline and italics if present can be transferred from the source segment via the numbered red tags. Just type the tag's number in the target segment editor and press the Esc key.

  13. Click the Next button in the target segment editor's toolbar. This action adds your translation to the opened translation memory and takes the next sentence to the source segment editor. If you don't wish to add it to the translation memory, use the "Move to the next/previous segment" buttons instead.

  14. When you translate the last sentence of the document, export the translation back to the original format (e.g. Ms Word) clicking the Export button in the segments grid toolbar. You can also use the menu Project > Export and exchange > Export current document.

  15. To preview currently-translated segment in the original document, please connect CafeTran to LibreOffice suite as described here. This is an optional feature.
