can't get new LibreOffice previewer to work (yet)

Hi Igor,

Very good news about the LibreOffice previewer, and I am really looking forward to testing it!

However, when I click:

Resources > Open LibreOffice for preview

a dialogue pops up saying:

"Install and choose LibreOffice in Preferences > Application connection."

However, I already installed it, and choose LibreOffice in Preferences > Application connection.

my class path =

C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program\classes\libreoffice.jar;C:\Program Files\LibreOffice\program;

What am I doing wrong here?

Michael

Good morning,

Addressing some questions:

> It seems that LibreOffice has to be launched and Writer has to be launched with an empty document. Then it works:

My tests shows that you only need to launch LibreOffice.

> Should the preview work with multi document projects too?

Currently, in the multi-document 'glue' mode you need to open the LO preview for each source document via Resources > Open LibreOffice for preview. For single-document projects, CafeTran creates the preview automatically.

> Pdf: can broken sentences be joined?

Yes, they can. Just remember to transfer the joining tag from the source segment.

> it would of course be cool if CT could handle the document-finding behind the scenes, and just show me the result.

This is something of a challenge with, say, 35 source documents in the project. You might end up with 35 LO Writer docs opened. To be considered.

> the document preview cannot be displayed in a CTE tab?

In my opinion, embbeded LibreOffice in CT tab would look "ugly", especially on laptop screens. All operating systems (even Windows 11) now have virtual desktops to quickly switch between with shortcuts. The idea to use secondary screen for the previewer is not bad either. To explore if it is possible to embed it a CTE tab.

> launch writer via: /Applications/LibreOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice

A macro to launch the app? What's wrong with just launching it via Launchpad?

> I won’t install Eclair as long there is no option to not use the preview.

Please see Preferences (access from the Dashboard menu) > Application connection chooser. Just deselect LibreOffice.

> "external link update disabled"

It looks like an LO issue with Calc documents having external links (https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/automatic-update-of-external-links-has-been-disabled/34903

The LibreOffice is an excellent office suite and the most accurate previewer for various translated document formats that one can have. I believe it is also the only solution that works for Mac, Linux and Windows, and which I was able to come up with.

> This means that target preview is not in real time, right?

If you mean automatic generation of the target language document for the preview, after each segment while you are translating it, then no, it is not possible. You can preview (review actually) in real-time only the exported target document.

If you mean automatic generation of the target language document for the preview, after each segment while you are translating it, then no, it is not possible.

OK. But, I can't either have the new LibreOffice source preview working properly (lack of real-time tracking) even after following your instructions. I have the latest LO installed on Windows 10. What may I be doing wrong?

In this new build, the Html preview tracking function isn't working as expected either. If I remember well, some months ago you said that in the "next build" this would be fixed by updating the embedded Java. This hasn't been fixed, right? Would it be possible to at least have the Html preview function fixed?

Thank you

> What may I be doing wrong?

I don't know. You might try to reinstall CafeTran (download and install it again). It includes the latest Java version, which might fix your html-related issues too.

...which might fix your html-related issues too

CTE reinstalled, but both the Html preview and the new LO preview tracking function isn't working. I've just tried with a Japanese source file, I'll try with an English source file tomorrow.
(I've reinstalled CTE on top of the existing location without uninstalling the old one first. Is this OK?

Make sure CafeTran's Help > About panel displays Java 17.0.2 or higher (currently Java 19).

I have it tested on each modern operating system properly. I am running out of ideas what might be wrong in your specific settings. You might submit a support ticket attaching the created .ctp package file there.

Even after re-installation CTE is still on Java 15.0.1. Then, I suppose I need to uninstall the old version first. Tomorrow first thing.

Hi Igor,

After reinstalling CafeTran, I have made sure the Java server version is 17.0.2 (Ubuntu 20.04).

I open a Libreoffice Writer window (LibreOffice 7.4.2.3) and in CT Preferences > General, when I select Application connection > LibreOffice, the connection path is not populated and does not stick when I select a directory manually.

Same after resetting CafeTran preferences.

When I use Open Libreoffice for preview, I get the error message asking to set LibreOffice in the Preferences.

Should CafeTran recognize my LibreOffice installation by itself? If not, could you please confirm the directory path I should point to for Ubuntu 20.04? Should that directory show up when I click on the Application connection button?

Hi Mario,

We're both waiting to get this to work, but I'd like to comment on: "

Then, using a secondary screen has become a new CTE requirement in order to use it ergonomically?"

I too work on a laptop with no dual screen, but the requirement to have Libreoffice open on a second "screen" does not strike me as a bad one.

It does not have to be a physical screen. You just open it on an separate virtual workspace/desktop. Switching between workspaces with a keystroke is quick and easy. I think Windows also offers virtual desktops and keybindings to switch between them. If the highlighting works as advertised, it should be quite alright. Don't you think?

I like the tabbed view for the current preview system as well, but having it on a separate application window sounds acceptable for a better preview experience (and PDF editing).

Are you using virtual workspaces? This featyre hasn't been advertised enough on Windows (and they copied it from Linux, for once).

Are you using virtual workspaces?

Hi Jean,

I use workspaces in Windows 10 all the time, but having to continuously switch back and forth while translating is not very ergonomic. (I'm now trying to come up with a different screen layout on my 32" monitor in order to have a reasonably narrow LO window opened alongside CTE.)

If it worked as advertised, I would much prefer the Html preview inside a tab because it's constantly visible while CTE occupies the full 32" screen. I find this arrangement very useful especially when translating non-technical texts, for they require a continuous target text adjustment (including splitting and merging) to render them the way I like and proper Italian often demands.

By the way, I'm not interested in the faithful layout reproduction of the source text with images in their proper position and all the rest (for this I keep the source document open on a second workspace), but rather I want to be able to see at a glance what comes before and what follows the currently translated segment, or in what text block I'm currently in.

By the way, is your LO installed in the default path as set by Linux Mint, if you are still using this distro? Or, have you followed Igor recommendation to install it in a different location?

Here too (Windows 10), the LO setting doesn't stick in Application connection. Often it's necessary to continuously clear the field and quit CTE. When it works, it works OK until the Editor jumps to a duplicate, in which case the preview goes back to the first occurrence of that sentence, loosing track of the current position.

With this new build, neither the HTML preview tracking feature works, and refreshing the page does nothing.

@Igor:

>> launch writer via: /Applications/LibreOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice

>A macro to launch the app? What's wrong with just launching it via Launchpad?

Sure, why not? I have a macro to launch CafeTran Espresso and now I can add the launching of LO writer (resizing and arranging its window, setting language detection to 'None', disabling the button bars and rulers etc. to create a non-distracting clean view) to that ... The less clicks, the better, isn't it?

>> I won’t install Eclair as long there is no option to not use the preview.

>Please see Preferences (access from the Dashboard menu) > Application connection chooser. Just deselect LibreOffice.

IMO the use of a preview isn't something that should be set at the app level, but at the project level.

Installed a new DMG on my MacBook Pro and got this:

image

Can I just ignore it?

Can I simply copy the Java 19 runtime from the CafeTran Espresso installation on my MacBook Pro to the iMac (where CafeTran Espresso uses Java 17)?

Just replace the runtime folder? Or is there more to do?

On Linux, CafeTran assumes LibreOffice installation location in /opt directory by default. If you have it installed elsewhere:

Click the Application Connection... button and then the Class path.. button . Next, navigate to the LibreOffice folder and select it.

For Linux users, I recommend downloading it from LibreOffice site directly, rather than from your distro repositories. The repositories may have fragmented LibreOffice installation where different parts of the suite are installed separately. This can result in some missing files needed for the connection.

As I said in the announcement, with duplicate searched strings, LibreOffice search function selects the first one found. This is the current limitation.

>   the LO setting doesn't stick in Application connection

Unless you change or reset the settings, it shouldn't occur. I can't confirm it.

> I'm not interested in the faithful layout reproduction of the source text with images in their proper position and all the rest

Well, I always thought this is the first thing users expect from the preview.

> I want to be able to see at a glance what comes before and what follows the currently translated segment, or in what text block I'm currently in.

CafeTran's own project's grid does exactly what you say, doesn't it? It displays the current text block in full context, showing even basic formatting. Then just please treat the LO preview as the helper feature. It does not interfere with the normal workflow in any way.

> for this I keep the source document open on a second workspace)

Treat the new feature as the enhanced version of your current screen arrangement.
