Deleted segment notes

It's the second time this week that, after closing a project (not CafeTran), when I reopen it I have lost all segment notes. Both times, this happened with a Trados project.

PS: bookmarked segments are also gone.

PS: all locked and non-propagated segment choices are all gone :/

Bookmarks are saved permanently only in projects created by CafeTran, as the other tools may not support the bookmarks concept. Also, segments can be locked permanently in the tool that created the project. This is usually done by the client in their tool to prevent some segments from editing. So if you create a project in CTE,  permanent locking should work just fine. Otherwise, it is only for the current session.

Adding segment comments in sdlxliff files have been introduced recently. There may be still some instances of sdlxliff where the comments (created in CT) work only for the current session. You can create a ticket with the attached sdlxliff file to examine it.

Hi Igor. There are two different issues in fact:

1) segment notes are important indeed, I use them to communicate with the client.

2) segment status is fine as temporary, I would just like it to work during a project. It's not possible to always leave the project window open because:

- CafeTran might crash (it happens)

- I might accidentally hit the project/CafeTran close button (this is a classic!)

- I might be working on a long project and another client might send me a short text to translate or ask me to check something on another project (I can't say no!)

Could this info be saved as some sort of virtual memory within CafeTran - temporarily?

I did a few tests this morning with 4 file formats (CafeTran, Wordfast, memoQ and SDL Trados).

Segment notes created on CafeTran work perfectly for memoQ and Wordfast files, but on none of my SDL Trados files. I can send you these files.

I also found out that, for instance, memoQ can actually not only create segment notes, but also change the segment status of SDL Trados files. In any case, the lock status is visible when I open these 3 file formats with a  text editor.

---

Another issue (not so important): Locked segments from memoQ files are hidden from CafeTran. Is it possible to make them visible? This would:

- help with consistency

- allow them to be saved to the TM

I'm 100% available and willing to assist you with anything I can (especially if you need me to tinker with all these 4 programs, in case you don't have them).

@LA:

Can you describe what causes CafeTran Espresso 2018 to crash?

>I might accidentally hit the project/CafeTran close button (this is a classic!)

Do you mean the keyboard shortcut Command+Q or the tiny red traffic sign in the upper left corner?

If you mean the keyboard shortcut, a solution via e.g. Keyboard Maestro is possible. But perhaps Igor is willing to reconsider his design decision (which made him remove the check, that still exists on Windows).

I don't think it's CafeTran's fault, it's probably something I have to optimise in my Mac. In the last month or so, CafeTran's been crashing quite often, and it's the only application in my Mac with this behaviour. I had given it 2G memory, maybe it needs more. For the most part, I have 8G memory and an SSD, Java is updated, I don't have too many apps open, etc. It crashes sometimes when I ask it to find a word in a glossary, in the project, etc. For sure it's something to do with the memory.

I hit command Q or command W sometimes by mistake when I'm trying to go for the S to save, I think.

All workarounds are possible, but a simple Close conformation window would be easier, no?

In any case, Igor has given me confirmation that this SDL Trados/deleted segment notes issue gets fixed with update 11.

I have had that too. I have been able to fix this, by installing a fresh CafeTran Espresso 2018. That's my experience.

CafeTran Espresso 2018 shouldn't crash at all (at least, it never does on my Macs).

How about making the keyboard shortcuts configurable? Just thinking loud here.

Good news.
