Hi Igor,
I've been eagerly testing Layout 5 today (and the other one), but I still wish you would also offer an option where the editing pane is actually integrated right into the grid, like in memoQ/DVX/Studio/Memsource, etc. I still think that this would save a lot of space, and that it is more user friendly.
In CafeTran, you have to look back and forth too much between the grid (macro level) and the src+trgt boxes (micro level)., IMO at least.

Hi Michael,
While testing with the new Layout 5, try unchecking View > Segment editors > Horizontal segment editors, resize the editors up a bit and dock any resource tab vertically to the left of the window (if your screen is large enough). You can really achieve the compactness in many ways depending where your main focus is. During the translation phase, the main focus is on the current segment edition and the resources so your eyes often wander to the resources (TMs, glossaries and the Web) and the Matchboard - for this, I think, the new layouts are almost perfect - the editors are in direct proximity to the resources. Also, note how easily you can resize them for long segments or a larger font of the current segment if you wish so. As for embedding the editors in the middle of the grid, as you suggest, it has an advantage indeed during the review/reading phase when you don't need to refer to other resources so much - I will experiment with such an "embedded" layout in the future. For now, the layout 4 where the grid takes the whole vertical space up and down should be good enough. Thanks for the feedback!

I tried what you suggested, but still couldn't get it quite optimal. No matter which layout I choose, or how I tweak it, the problem (for me at least) is I actually would like the editing to take place in the grid, so that while translating (or reviewing, for that matter), I can quickly see the above and below context of the sentence I am currently translating. I often merge or join segments, which is also much easier to make sense of in an embedded arrangement.
You mentioned that during the translation phase, the main focus is on the current segment editing, but I don't entirely agree. I think that it is ideal to have the source and target boxes embedded in the grid because it not only (1) provides better context while translating the current segment, but (2) it also makes it easy to focus on the particular segment (on its own, that is), as it is in the centre of the grid and highlighted.
Also, in any of CT's current layouts, your current segment (source+target) is always shown in two places, instead of just in one. I don't think this is ideal, in terms of space-saving, and in term of UI clarity/simplicity.
I'm VERY much looking forward to your experiments with an embedded layout in the future!
If the editor could be embedded in the centre of the grid, I would very much like to try using CT with only the Grid + Matchboard. That is, without any extra windows for TMs, web resources, glossaries, etc. This would be a very minimalist version of the CT UI, and I think possibly a very good one.

The new build (2018050701) of update 7 is available. It adds the option to block auto-propagation from locked segments - see it in Edit > Preferences > Auto-propagation tab.
Please download and install the new build of the update 7 as described in the announcement post above.
FWIW, I like layout 4. My main screen is moderately large, (27'), and the the layout is workable at the resolution I set.

Thanks for sharing this. Layout 4 is optimal for larger screens indeed, especially if you refer to Web resources quite often.
When I drag the zip file to the dashboard on Windows, I get an error message:

On Windows, you changed the default installation of CafeTran to the system folder - "Program Files". This is a write-protected folder so that any updates (without reinstallation) are denied. I would suggest changing the installation of CafeTran either to its default location or into some user's directory to make the updates possible.

I strongly agree with that, but since it probably means major changes (hundreds of lines of code?), in the meantime it would be nice to have the segments status background color (for example, grey background for Checked segments) applied to the Editor too, not only to the Grid (quite often I look at the grid ONLY to verify the segment's status background color, it slows me down).
If, of course, applying different colors to the Editor is not a matter of hundred of lines of code... ;-)
The optional layout with the editors embedded in the center of the grid is coming in the next update. Please stay tuned.

CafeTran Espresso 2018 Akua Update 7 is available for download. The update can be performed via Drag and Drop as follows:
1. Run CafeTran.
2. Download 20180504_update.zip file from here and place it on your desktop. Do not unzip or rename the file after downloading.
Note: On Mac OSX system, Safari web browser may unzip the file automatically after downloading it. Before you download the update file, uncheck the following Safari option:
Safari > Preferences > General > Open "safe" files after downloading.
3. Drag and Drop the downloaded 20180504-update.zip file anywhere in CafeTran's initial screen - the Dashboard.
Alternatively, you can install 20180504_update.zip file via the "Install Update" button in the Help > About panel instead of dragging and dropping.
Important! Please complete all your translation projects in your current CafeTran version before updating.
