Just to illustrate the difference in required space
Most hits and fragments would fit into this 2-column view. too

I second this, just one source with red for removals and green for additions, getting rid of the need for 2 source segments, is this what you mean?

Indeed, yes. Anyway, the look and feel of the fuzzies can already be changed in the current version.

Recently you presented some screenshots of the narrowed memory pane with the hit numbers not wrapping. Now imagine how the proposed change would fit into the narrowed pane, especially with the longer exact and fuzzy matches. I am not saying it is a wrong proposal but this is definitely not optimal for the narrowed TM panes.

Indeed, but in the meantime I had found another, better arrangement – see here, but only unfortunately it is not saved (see also here).
See it as a question of principle – which presentation is more pleasant? – and the wrapping / scrolling problem as secondary. The scrolling problem as such would be solved, as the TM tables – at least actually, at project start – always fit (the percentage does not necessarily need to be in a column of ifts own. And any user will set the width to his own reasonable dimensions. The additional space you will gain can even be bigger when havin a lot of small chunks/fragments/hits.

Just to illustrate:
There are twelve lines where only six lines would be necessary. As long as these hits are presented as "Fuzzy" in the matchboard (and the matchboard lacks the comparison for real fuzzies), the matchboard is not an alternative yet for a better TM pane display.

In relation with this discussion here just another request.
The actual match display in a TM Tab consists of 3 elements:
This can be quite room-consuming, and especially with huge segments.
On the other hand side there is the fuzzy display in the matchboard
There is no comparison at all. Not the optimal solution yet.
However, having in mind the quite compact start up display of TM tabs – see here:
perhaps it would be time to change the match display a bit. Example:
This is a text.
Dies ist ein Text.
100 %
This is a text, with some additions.
Dies ist ein Text.
66 %
This is a text, with some additions.
Dies ist ein Text.
66 %
My car is red and blue.
Mein Auto ist rot und blau.
100 ‘%
My car is red.
Mein Auto ist rot und blau.
70 %
My car is red.
Mein Auto ist rot und blau.
70 %
Just to have additions or deletions marked (as red text or as yellow marked text). This would allow a much more compact view, also in the matchboard.
