Stupid me :-)
I tried to play with the tabs again to see if I can change their position to something more convenient (tabs, panes, I'm not sure that I have the vocabulary right), and it all went messy again and I can't understand how to move them back. I've tried closing and opening the project again but without much success. Attached is what I get now...
I am under the impression that once you open Cafetran, you'd better stick with the way the layout pops out (not always the same) and don't touch anything.
> I have no fricking idea how to get the panels, that are now piled on the right, back where they were at the bottom of the window.
Just click the icon at the bottom right-hand corner to undock that panel.
The attached screenshot is not a default setting. First, you joined the tabs mulitply and then docked the multiply-joined tab to the main panel.
Well, CT offers almost an unlimited arrangement of panels to suit individual needs and preferences. In the past, I have seen numerous discussions on the best layout (e.i. horizontal vs. vertical layout of the current segment). So instead of imposing any specific solution, CT presets the simple default layout and gives the user the whole range of choices. The preferable layout even depends on the type of resources you work with. For example, you might wish to change it when working with web resources or online services rather than your own translation memories/glossaries.
Igor, I appreciate that you decided to let everyone rearrange their screen how they see it fit. This is a great decision and I am all for it.
The problem is, it's totally counterintuitive. If only you could put a handle on the interface elements that users could move with the mouse. It would be sooooo nice and sooo intuitive.
I am not an expert in Cafetran, I use it for translation and I never played with the interface before. I noticed that it won't always display the same way but I learned to live with it.
I'm sure that people who are absolute experts in how to configure Cafetran may laugh at me, but I just wanted to move the panes a little bit to make them more convenient for me (and I love to join them), and it resulted in a chaos that I cannot fix anymore.
It's been 45 minutes since I started and I still cannot get them back where they were.
Cafetran is a great software that I enjoy using, but unless you spend a lot of time messing with the interface, it's hell to use. I recommended it to many colleagues and many have just thrown the towel because they were unable to wrap their head around it.
I know that some users will object this and that other software is worse, but since I only use Cafetran, it's the only product that I actually care about.
> Just click the icon at the bottom right-hand corner to undock that panel.
I've tried this in my second screenshot but nothing happens, where am I supposed to click?
Is there a way to reset the interface? I'm trying all the possible options but without any result...
When you dock the windows, use the icons representing those docked windows at the bottom right-hand corner to undock them back to tabbed view.
To disjoin the joined tabs, right-click at the tab and choose the Disjoin tabs command.
To return to the default window layout, choose the menu View > Window layout > Default window layout.
> If only you could put a handle on the interface elements that users could move with the mouse. It would be sooooo nice and sooo intuitive.
Do you mean the handle in the dividers to resize the individual panels? I am all for intuitive solutions as well. :)
> Do you mean the handle in the dividers to resize the individual panels?
No, I'm not talking about those. I am talking about handles that could allow you to move the interface elements on the screen, not to just resize them.
> To disjoin the joined tabs, right click on the tab and choose the Disjoin tabs command.
This I know how to do.
But please have a look at the previous screen that I shared. See the bottom-right pane for instance? This one which contains MT?
I have no idea how to move it. It has no handle that you could grab to put it someplace else. Yes, there is a way to move it, you know it, many others know it, but as a relative beginner, I can't find how you do this.
See the statistics pane on the top-right? Same thing. How to move it? No idea.
I don't see this screen anymore because I created a new project. When I open the old project, the panes are not at the same place for a reason.
And the new project? See attachment. The Matchboard jumped to the right and I don't know how to move it, but it's OK, I'll leave it where it is, I don't want to touch anything because I don't want to get stuck again.
My whole point is that CT's interface is really not user-friendly at all, unless you have many hours of experience with it, which I am sure most of the members of this community have. But not the beginners like me.
And this is why many try and drop CT.
> The Matchboard jumped to the right and I don't know how to move it.
Use the icon representing the docked window (the Matchbar icon in this case) at the bottom right-hand corner to undock it back to tabbed view, if you wish.

Your idea is very nice, perfect actually. Is there any Mac software (e.i. a browser, an e-mail client, whatever) that you are using and which is able to arrange the interface panels the way you describe it? I know the main web browsers can change the tab order by dragging the tabs with the mouse but nothing more complex than it.
BTW, the layout solution in your last attachment is very nice.

Not really, but someone came with this:

> BTW, the layout solution in your last attachment is very nice.
Thanks, however I have no merit here, it just happened while I was tying to figure out how to move the tabs :-)

Hi,
CafeTran Espresso 2016 Ichiro - Update 21 is available for download. The update can be performed via the Drag & Drop procedure as follows:
1. Run CafeTran.
2. Download 20161017_update.zip file from here (do not unzip or rename the file after downloading) and place it on your desktop.
Note: On Mac OSX, the Safari web browser may unzip the file automatically after downloading. To prevent this, just use the right-click menu and choose the "Download Linked File" command.
3. Drag and drop the downloaded file into the Project Dashboard and restart the program.
4. Drag and drop the downloaded file into the Project Dashboard and restart the program. Second time!
The step 4 above is only for the users who missed the preview (Harbinger) and Ichiro updates with the new icon sets.
On Mac OS X, the Java 1.8.0_77 update broke the drag and drop function in CafeTran. The fix is available starting from CafeTran's Update 4. If you skipped all the updates from 4 to 20, please choose the downloaded update file via the Help > About > Install Update button instead of dragging and dropping it into the Project Dashboard.
What's new:
This update fixes mainly some reported visual issues and improves a few features:
1. Consistent tags size.
2. Less bright Matchboard colors.
3. Choice between the horizontal and vertical divider when joining tabs in the View > Tabs menu. The horizontal divider is the default one.
4. Improved synchronization between the current segment and its auto-assembling result to avoid timing issues with large memories set in the Automatic mode.
5. Total Recall can function in the Clipboard workflow.
6. In the "Paper/Image document" workflow, the selected Total Recall memory tables open for searching automatically.
7. Added "Hide source segment tags" keyboard shortcut in the Action > Tags menu to toggle tags display (already present in update 20 but not announced there).
Have a nice week!
Igor
