Migrating from Trados: how to handle TMs (attributes, updating etc.)

A question from Zu in the CT Google Group: -- I'm a Trados user and Im seriously considering changing to CafeTran. But there are some questions that I can't solve by myself. I checked out all of the videos and everything, maybe somebody can help :) As Im coming from Trados, I use Trados-terminology, so to say. Maybe Cafetran uses other words or concepts to define things and thats why I can't find it :) The questions are: 1. How can I define fields and attributes in the memory for every project? 2. How can I see the attributes from my Trados memory (.tmx)? 3. How do I know that CafeTran is updating the new segments in the memory? Specially if there are more memories. 4. If I use the Project Memory, how can I update my "real, overall" memory? --

An answer from Martin: >As Im coming from Trados, I use Trados-terminology, so to say. Maybe >Cafetran uses other words or concepts to define things and thats why I >can't find it :) Hi! I think it's a great idea to switch from Trados to CaeTran. And don't worry: Everything you're asking about is possible. > > >1. How can I define fields and attributes in the memory for every >project? When you open or create a memory, a settings dialogue appears (or is available). In this dialogue there is a "Filter" button, which opens another dialogue where you can define all the attributes. >2. How can I see the attributes from my Trados memory (.tmx)? In the same way: by clicking on the "Filter" button in the settings dialogue. >3. How do I know that CafeTran is updating the new segments in the >memory? Specially if there are more memories. In the settings dialogue, you can set each memory as "Read only" or not by clicking on the "Read only" checkbox. CafeTran will add segments to all open memories that are not set as "Read only". >4. If I use the Project Memory, how can I update my "real, overall" >memory? There are two ways: 1. Don't set the big, overall memory as "Read only", so segments will be added to both memories. 2, If you only want to use the big memory as a reference memory while you're working on the project, set it as "Read only" and, after completing the project, re-open it and merge the ProjectTM with it. Usually, there's always a solution for everything you want to do in CafeTran, and often, even several quite different workflows are possible. And here's a general tip: Almost all users of this mailing list have moved to the new CafeTran forum at https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/discussions So you're much more likely to get answers there quickly.

I was wondering whether it wouldn't be preferable to rename the Filter button in this dialogue box to a more appropriate: Advanced...

Hi Martin,

thank you very much for your answers! I really want to work with CafeTran full time, but Im still struggling with the TMs...

I tried your answer to the question "
2. How can I see the attributes from my Trados memory (.tmx)? In the same way: by clicking on the "Filter" button in the settings dialogue. " but when I do that, the fields are empty. Maybe I do something wrong, so I tell you what I do: First I clic on the tab of this memory  and then I go in the menu to "Memory" -> "Translation Memory Options" and the window "TMX memory" appears. Now I am in the settings of this particular memory, right? However, the "Properties filter" section are empty...

Im going to apply the  answers of the other questions, thank you very much for your help!

You can define the filters (or rather: properties) yourself; they will then be stored in the memory.

However, I'm not sure about (existing) attributes in TMX files created by Trados. The creation date and creation ID (if any) are shown when you mouse over each segment's (blue) segment number in the tabbed pane. I'm not sure if any other attributes are stored in Trados TMX exports. You can try importing an SDLTM file into a memory (Memory -- Import -- Import SDLTM memory) to see if it contains more attributes than a Trados TMX file.

It looks like the props are there, although in my examples not very clear (EU numbers). Below in CT, I also opened a Studio TMX in an editor, and they are there as well. Overwhelmingly.
