CafeTran

First thing to do when you open an MQXLIFF project, is probably to filter on Translated segments and assign the status Checked to them.

However, when you quit CafeTran, this assigned status is lost. When you did translate some empty segments on your own, after assigning the Checked status, you have a problem:

When you start CafeTran again, you cannot differentiate between your own work (that has to be QA'd) and the legacy segments (which don't have to be QA'd in many cases).

Sounds like a job for my (your?) "parallel file" idea, in which all kinds of stuff that can't be stored in memoQ and Studio project files can be stored, such as: 

• Checked status (which is very important in my workflow and one reason I don't really think CT is ready to use on Studio/memoQ files yet), and 

• CafeTran notes! Another thing I can't work without anymore.

Although CafeTran's handling of memoQ and Studio files is already very good (and is steadily and constantly improving), without the ability to use CafeTran’s Checked status and Notes, I don’t think it's really ready yet. To the point where I actually have a potential new client who insists that I use Studio, and no other CAT tool whatsoever, and I have been experimenting with doing these particular jobs in Studio rather than CT. Which is a real shame, because I have CT set up just the way I want it, and I’m having a really hard time getting my big glossary into MultiTerm/Studio.

Another argument for my "parallel file" mentioned above.

I am currently translating a .sdlxliff file, and I just noticed that the Project/Client/Subject fields are empty under Project > Project Configuration . And if I add data to them and save the project, they immediately disappear again. That is, they don't stick. I assume this is because nothing can get saved in the .sdlxliff file that might compromise it.

Does this mean I can't use any Client/Subject priorities when translating .sdlxliff files in CT? That would be pretty terrible. I hope I am just misunderstanding something.

@Hans: I know you mentioned this somewhere recently, but I can't remember where.

Would this be useful (I think it would):

Translation > Jump over > Segments with "Translated" status (i.e., SDL Studio segment status set to Translated, not CafeTran’s "Checked" status).

If I close CT in the middle of my .sdlxliff project, and then reopen CT, all my Checked statuses (highlighted segments, so I can see what I have already done or not done) are gone.

How do people here handle this? It would be best if CT could remember them, of course, but a workaround would be if I could jump over all Translated segments.

I thought switching on Translation > Jump over > Exact memory matches might do it, but this doesn't seem to work.

Spoke too soon, Translation > Jump over > Exact memory matches does work to jump over segments I have already translated. I was just using the wrong shortcut.

Hmm, just had an idea (which I'm sure others have had before me), which might solve the problem of missing functionality when translating Studio .sdlxliff files in CafeTran. That is, I think I figured out how to translate .sdlxliff files in CT, but still have access to CT's Checked statuses and CT notes.

Here goes (feel free to comment!):

Right-click on a file in the Projects tab in SDL Studio, select Batch Tasks > Export for bilingual review, and export your .sdlxliff file to a bilingual Word table .docx file.

Hide everything that does not need translating and so the Segment IDs and hidden codes in the bilingual .docx file do not get messed up.

Translate this file in CT. Afterwards, reimport this file into SDL Studio by right-clicking on the same file in the Projects tab in SDL Studio, select Batch Tasks, and now select Batch Tasks > Update from bilingual review.

As far as I know, even CT's notes should get imported into Studio as Studio comments, as they are basically just Word comments in the .docx bilingual file.

PS: I was wondering about that. I mean, I think I was wondering about the possibility of doing what I think you mean, which is: just change how CT identifies its Notes and Checked segments when translating Studio files. I assume this is what you did to get CT's Checked status to work with memoQ files.

If Studio calls them "Translated" (in it's XML) rather than "Checked", then just have CT call its own "Checked" segments "Translated" segments when translating Studio files.
